Alphabet Anatomy: Review

Alphabet Anatomy: Meet the Capital Letters
Alphabet Anatomy: Meet the Capital Letters
Author: Linda Ann Jones
Illustrator: Branson Jones
Illustrator: Toby Mickle
Publisher: FriesenPress
Pages: 32

Summary:

Alphabet Anatomy's innovative rhyming verses and unique illustrations instruct on letter sound, recognition, AND how to write the letter, thus its anatomy. Thoroughly entertaining, each letter's heartwarming personality and characteristics will engage and delight children as they discover what the letters do behind the scenes when they're not busy making words. The letters know that the journey to reading is inherently complex, and mastery of these essential skills is absolutely vital for future success. In Alphabet Anatomy, the letters love to share their lives, and their highest aspiration is that each child who meets them will embrace this wondrous journey, and develop a life-long love for not only reading but writing as well. Alphabet Anatomy teaches full understanding of the alphabet, that is, the four inter-connected components: 1. Letter shape knowledge or recognition; 2. Letter name knowledge; 3. Letter sound knowledge; 4. Letter writing ability. In addition, Alphabet Anatomy utilizes the four core elements which extensive research has proven effectively teach reading and provide a solid and effective foundation for proficient reading in later years: 1. Phonological awareness; 2. Letter identification; 3. Vocabulary development; 4. Recall and retell sentences and stories. Soon to come: Meet The Lower Case Letters

My Thoughts:

It was the perfect time for my daughter and I to read this book. We've been working on the alphabet a lot recently (she's almost got it down!) so we were really happy to read this. This book makes learning the alphabet fun. The letters are brought to life with very colorful and creative illustrations. Along with each illustration, there is a little rhyme that goes along with it that explains how to write the letters. I think this is very helpful when learning and memorizing. I still remember rhymes that I was taught when I was a youngster. 8x8 is 64, shut your mouth and say no more! ;)

I think this book is a really fun tool to use if you're working with a child on learning or writing the letters of the alphabet. Get your kids excited about learning! We are waiting to meet the lowercase letters now!

Victor and Tristan: Review

Victor and Tristan
Victor and Tristan
Author: R.A. Swart
Publisher: CreateSpace
Pages: 319

Summary:

Having enough of a life investing money and brokering deals, John Smith retires to a quiet suburb in which he hopes nothing particularly interesting ever happens and where he can be left at peace with his philosophical musings.

However, when the movers vacate the house across the cul de sac from his own, leaving behind the requisite odds, ends, and family, John finds his retirement and solitude upset by Victor and Tristan, the bookish son and fanciful daughter of the staid Mr. and Mrs. Ratling. From his first encounter with the pair and their strange views, John realizes that something unusual has come into his life.

Victor and Tristan follows the pragmatic John Smith through his reality-expanding journey from the mundane into the fantastic.
Travelling from the hills near his home to the plains of a distant world with Tristan, Victor, the frank Mrs. Grummings, the irreverent Iridan, the enigmatic Cassandra, and the alchemical android Janus, John comes to terms with the existence of magic, alchemy, alternate realities, and even the possibility of eternal life.

However, the strange, once encountered, can never be shut neatly away: all who embrace the improbable are forever changed. Can John, Victor, and most importantly, Tristan retain their own ideals and identities when encountering people and events who defy the simple monikers of “good” and “evil”?

My Thoughts:

I really found myself enjoying this book. My favorite thing about this book was the relationship between Victor and Tristan. (In the beginning I kept thinking that Tristan was going to be a boy.) Victor is very tolerant and patient with his little sister and always treats her very well. Tristan is a very sweet and innocent little girl who doesn't always think logically but I liked that about her. There is a very strong bond between the two. They have the type of relationship that I hope my children will have with each other. While I loved the kids, I hated strongly disliked their parents. In the beginning I mostly *disliked* their father but in the end I think that the mother was even worse! The other kids in the neighborhood were snotty little brats, nothing like Victor and Tristan.

Victor, Tristan, and their new friend John end up in a totally different world full of magic and danger. This book is full of things that really make you think. For example, if a man made machine has emotions and a mind of its own should it be treated as a person or is it still just a machine? What if this machine is willing to die for the people it loves? I don't really know what else to say about this book without giving away too much other than I really enjoyed it. There better be a sequel though because the ending left me thinking WTF?!?!

Pandora's Box: Review

Pandora's Box
Pandora's Box
Author: Julia Dweck
Illustrator: Chris Robertson
Publisher: KiteReaders
Pages: 22

Summary:

A little girl penguin is different than her brothers. When she falls through the ice, she finds a golden box. She gets it to the surface and tries to open it amidst all the other animals warnings. The other animals finally decide to help her and a wonderful surprise is found inside the box.

My Thoughts:

I'm back with another book by Julia Dweck! Pandora is different from all of the other penguins. One day she falls through the ice and finds a box. She wants to find out what is inside but all of the others think that it is a bad idea to open it. After see how important it is for Pandora, the other penguins decide to believe in her and help her get the box open. When the mystery box pops open, they are all pleasantly surprised with its contents.

My daughter loved this story, especially the surprise that was hidden in the box. I loved the rhyming flow of the words and the illustrations are cute. We should all believe in and help out the ones that we love. I'm also glad that Pandora was different from the others and had a mind of her own. I really push my kids to be themselves rather than trying to be like everyone else. The people who truly love and care about you will love you for who you really are and it's OK to be different. The best you that you can possibly be is yourself.

The Raven Boys: Review & Giveaway!

The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1)The Raven Boys
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Series: The Raven Cycle #1
Pages: 409

Summary:

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts:

Blue lives in a home with a family full of psychics and is the only one who does not have the ability. But one night while in a churchyard, she sees a boy's spirit. This means that he is either her true love or that she killed him. She never thought that she would ever associate with a Raven Boy but finds herself drawn to a group of them.

This is the first book I have read by Maggie Stiefvater and I am absolutely in love with her writing style already. The characters were all very well developed. I felt like I knew each and every one of them and they were all unique and had their own distinct voice. A lot of people have mentioned that they didn't care for the character names in this book but I actually enjoyed them. They were very different from the names we usually see. I never once had a hard time keeping track of who was who, and I really enjoyed knowing the background of each character.

This book just sucked me in and spit me out wanting more. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I would definitely recommend that you check this book out if this is a genre that you enjoy. Oh! I have to mention that this book has an absolutely beautiful cover! The picture doesn't quite show how pretty it is in person.

* I paid for this book with my own money and this is my honest opinion.

Firmoo Glasses: Review

This post is going to be a little different from my normal book reviews but I figured it would be fun to talk about something other than books for today! I was recently sent a pair of glasses for review from Firmoo which is a worldwide popular eyeglasses store which has 560,000 fans on Facebook. I had never heard of Firmoo before this so I thought it would be great to give them a try. I originally wanted to test out a pair of wrap around sunglasses but they weren't available for review so I decided to get these glasses with a brown 80% tint. They have both prescription and non-prescription glasses available for very affordable prices starting at $8. So if you want to try out some new glasses without spending a ton of money I would go check out their site.

Here's the link to Firmoo: www.firmoo.com

They also have a first pair free program for new customers that you can check into and I will give you the link for that! http://www.firmoo.com/free-glasses.html

Here is a picture of what they sent me. I was happily surprised when I realized that the glasses came with a hard case, a cleaning cloth, a screwdriver, and a soft case. The soft case is really nice and thick and seems to be of really good quality. They seem to work really well and block out the sun nicely. I really like my glasses so far and I think I may go back to order those wrap around sunglasses that I wanted in the beginning. I have a tough time with sunglasses they always seem to be too wide for my face. Seriously, the pair of sunglasses that I own that fit me the best are for ages 3 and up. I swear, I'm like the size of a kindergartner. *hehe* Does anyone else have that problem?

Here is the link to the glasses I chose if you want to go check them out: http://www.firmoo.com/eyeglasses-p-1017.html

What Firmoo has to say:

"The old opinion that glasses are only necessities for people with vision problems has already gone. Glasses are increasingly becoming a fad and must-have accessories for celebs and fashionistas. Everyday we can spot millions of non prescription glasses wearers and we are constantly fascinated by many noted film stars’ signature non prescription glasses. They instantly upgrade your look of modern, sexy, vintage or geek by wearing different styles of frames
.
Any hot glasses/sunglasses /goggles frames you want can be found on Firmoo, and all are available for both prescription lenses and non-prescription lenses. Are you desperate to have a new look? Now here is the chance, Firmoo has launched a First Pair Free Program to people worldwide. You will absolutely fall in love with the excellent quality, affordable prices, fashionable designs, fast delivery and the good service after trying them with paying shipping only! You even can get a refund/exchange if you are not satisfied with them. It's totally Risk free, so why not have a try?"

America: Danger Close!: Review

America: Danger Close!
America: Danger Close!
Author: Jesse Prewitt
Publisher: WestBowPress
Pages: 112

Summary:

America is in Critical Condition!

Only the Christians hold the KEY to save her!

This book reveals what MUST be done, before it's too late for America!

America: Danger Close! offers guidance to every church leader in America. Christians know what must be done to deliver this great nation from its critical condition, but will people do it--before it's too late?

Save America NOW!

My Thoughts:

We all know that America is in bad shape right now and in this book Prewitt explains how American Christians can come together to save our country.

This was a very fast read, the main part of the book was less than 100 pages, but I found it to be interesting. Some of the statistics in this book were surprising to me. For example, it says that 83% of Americans are Christian but only 33% of the world's population are Christian. That means that there are a lot of Christians here in our country who if they band together, according to Prewitt, could save our country from the critical condition it is in right now.

I think this would be an interesting read for all the American Christians out there.

Tales From Old Oaktown: Racoon Rodeo: Review

Tales From Old Oaktown: Raccoon RodeoTales From Old Oaktown: Raccoon Rodeo
Author: Nicole Wright
Illustrator: Joseph Mesa
Publisher: Ravenfire Publishing
Pages: 18

Summary:

Tales From Old Oaktown: Raccoon Rodeo is the perfect short, bedtime story to read to kids at bedtime or any time! (18 pages - Recommended for ages 4-8)

Sheriff Ralphy the raccoon has his work cut out for him when some shady rats who call themselves the "Rat Pack Gang" come into town looking to stir up trouble.

When Miss Rachel the raccoon's jewels go missing, it's up to Ralphy to catch the pesky varmints which leads to an unexpected twist and an epic showdown, Raccoon Rodeo style.

My Thoughts:

This story is pretty cute and is written by a 9 year old girl. I really enjoy reading books that are written by children. The one thing that threw me off a little was that although rodeo was in the title, there was no rodeo in the book. There is a shootout in the story but it involves shooting targets not each other which I was happy about. I try to refrain from exposing my munchkins to violence as much as possible so that was nice!

The illustrations, done by the author's uncle, were excellent. I really hope that Miss Wright continues to write books and has her uncle illustrate. They seem like a great team and, in my opinion, have a lot of potential. I look forward to seeing if this young girl has more writing in her future.

Never Let Me Go: Review

Never Let Me Go
Author: Kazuo Ishiguro
Publisher: Vintage
Pages: 304

Summary:

From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day comes a devastating new novel of innocence, knowledge, and loss. As children Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy were students at Hailsham, an exclusive boarding school secluded in the English countryside. It was a place of mercurial cliques and mysterious rules where teachers were constantly reminding their charges of how special they were.

Now, years later, Kathy is a young woman. Ruth and Tommy have reentered her life. And for the first time she is beginning to look back at their shared past and understand just what it is that makes them special–and how that gift will shape the rest of their time together. Suspenseful, moving, beautifully atmospheric, Never Let Me Go is another classic by the author of The Remains of the Day. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts:

I really don't have any idea what to say about this book. At first I didn't like it because the author reveals things slowly, bit by bit, and I felt like I didn't really understand what was going on. But I think that's the way the author intended it to be.

MAY INCLUDE SPOILERS: Basically these kids live in a private school, sheltered from the world and are told that they are different, they are special. They are really clones that are raised just to be organ donors and then die. That is their purpose in life. They can't reproduce. They become carers, donors, and then their life is over.

This book was pretty sad actually. These kids don't really even question their lives or fight to try and change it. It really makes you think. If this is how it was in our world would we just see it as normal or that it's just the way things are? If we could have an endless supply of healthy organs to save our lives would we become alright with it?

I didn't actually have an opinion formed on whether or not I liked this book until I was done reading it. It seems like most people either love it or hate it. When I was done reading I kept thinking about this book so the story stayed with me and the more I thought about it the more I realized I liked the story.

So I think that his book is either a hit or miss, you'll either love it or hate it. My advice would be to try and find it at your library, borrow it from a friend, or find it at a cheap price somewhere just in case you are one of the people who don't like it.

I honestly had never heard of this book or the movie before reading this. Have you read this book or seen the movie?

My Dog's Got Fleas: Review

My Dog's Got Fleas!

My Dog's Got Fleas
Author: Julia Dweck
Illustrator: Mark Aardvart
Publisher: KiteReaders
Pages: 23

Summary:

My Dog's Got Fleas is a fast-paced, frolicking tale about the world's most fabulous fleas. Readers will giggle and delight learning about rare fleas that work, dance, sing, and even save the world, amidst the fur of a shaggy dog. The text is written in a lively rhyme scheme that will keep young readers entertained from beginning to end. The brilliant 3D illustrations capture the humor and personality of each extraordinary flea. My Dog's Got Fleas is pure magic and fun!

My Thoughts:

This is a story about a dog who is covered in rare fleas. Each flea has their own unique personality, for example there are artistic fleas, tender fleas, superhero fleas, nasty evil fleas and many more! My daughter's favorite flea was BeauteeFlea because she is pink of course, and my daughter loves anything that's pink. You would never guess all of the different kinds of fleas your pets could have living on them.

Julia Dweck has an amazing talent. She can take a normally boring subject, such as fleas, and turn it into an adorable, fun book. And as always she works with wonderful illustrators that bring her stories to life.

Night Road: Review

Night Road
Night Road
Author: Kristin Hannah
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Pages: 385

Summary:

For a mother, life comes down to a series of choices.
To hold on…
To let go..
To forget…
To forgive…
Which road will you take?

For eighteen years, Jude Farraday has put her children’s needs above her own, and it shows—her twins, Mia and Zach—are bright and happy teenagers. When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude. Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia’s best friend. Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable.

Jude does everything to keep her kids safe and on track for college. It has always been easy-- until senior year of high school. Suddenly she is at a loss. Nothing feels safe anymore; every time her kids leave the house, she worries about them.

On a hot summer’s night her worst fears come true. One decision will change the course of their lives. In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget…or the courage to forgive.

NIGHT ROAD is vivid, emotionally complex novel that raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts:

Jude raises her twins Mia and Zach with their best interests at heart. She is a little overprotective at times but that's because she loves them and doesn't ever want anything to happen to them. Jude only wants the best for her children. When Mia, a shy friendless girl, brings home Lexi, a foster child, they instantly become friends and Jude welcomes her into their family. When Zach and Mia fall in love, the trio becomes inseparable. But one night will completely change all of their lives, forever . . .

My mom recommended this book to me and I'm SO happy she did. I am absolutely in love with this book and I will definitely be thinking about it for a very long time. It's a beautiful story. The characters and the story were very believable so it made it really easy to feel what they were feeling. It definitely takes your emotions for a ride. I was laughing one minute, frustrated the next, and crying the next. I started tearing up, realized I couldn't see the words through my tears, and told myself to toughen up so I could finish the book! *hehe* This author is amazing and has some of the most beautiful writing I have seen.

This book has reminded me to forgive, love, accept, to hold my kids a little tighter, and to appreciate and enjoy every second I get with my loved ones. I think this is a book everyone should have on their TBR list for sure, you'll love it! I need to read more by this author.

Have you read this book or any other book by Hannah?

Diary of a Penguin-napper: Review

Diary of a Penguin-napper
Diary of a Penguin-napper
Author: Sally Harris
Publisher: Frankly Books
Pages: 162

Summary:

3 weeks ...
2 boys ...
1 little penguin ...

What could possibly go wrong?

When 11 (and a half) year old Marty is partnered up with Jessica on the overnight science trip, he thinks all of this dreams are about to come true. It's his big chance to impress the most beautiful girl in Year 7 (and probably the world) and he wouldn't miss it for anything.

Only problem is: Marty can't afford to go on the overnight trip.

Yet.

Inspired by the urban myth that it is possible to steal a penguin from the zoo on a school visit, Diary of a Penguin-napper is a hilarious tale of growing up, bending the rules and how one big fuss can be caused by stealing just one little penguin.

My Thoughts:

When Marty gets paired up with the girl of his dreams, although she doesn't know his name, for a science trip he would do anything to go. Even if that means stealing a penguin . . .

I thought this book was absolutely adorable and hilarious! Love, love, loved it! My stepson is really excited to read it too. This is the story of how a penguin ended up in Marty's bathroom and you get to go along for the adventure. I would have to ask my stepson if this book is anything like The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, I haven't read them but he has read them all and loves them. It includes snippets from Mary's diary throughout the book which are really funny.

This book was so cute and a lot of fun to read, even for an adult. I know that kids would LOVE this! I would definitely recommend this book! It will show you EXACTLY how much trouble one little penguin can cause.

Peach Creek: Review

Peach Creek: A Briarcliff Lane Novel (Volume 3)Peach Creek: A Briarcliff Lane Novel
Author: Adler Duncan
Series: Volume 3
Publisher: CreateSpace
Pages: 246

Summary:

The Eagle Ford Shale is proving to be as productive as a Middle East oil field, and Willy Mraznik is hell-bent on getting his share. An independent wildcatter, Willy punches holes in the ground up and down the Peach Creek valley using second-rate machinery won in a poker game.

When a drilling hand goes missing, detective Buddy McCoy stumbles onto evidence of a crime, and Willy becomes the prime suspect. As the investigation develops, Buddy's allegiance is challenged and the detective becomes the target of suspicion from police and criminals alike.

Set against the backdrop of modern-day Texas oil exploration, Peach Creek is a story about a man who fights for his share of the treasure and those who become entangled in his quest for wealth. From the author of Briarcliff Lane, Peach Creek explores the sinister side of the fictional residents of small town Gonzales.

My Thoughts:

When a man goes missing, detective Buddy McCoy is determined to fit all the pieces together and solve the crime but ends up turning into a suspect himself. Will he be able to find out what happened and keep himself out of trouble or will it remain a mystery?

I was interested in reading this book as soon as I read the description. I like murder/mystery books and I've never read one that was set in the oilfield. My fiance has worked on drilling rigs for many years so I knew I had to give this book a shot. I'm not sure how accurate all of the drilling rig descriptions were, I'd have to have my honey read it, but you can tell that the author has done a lot of research or has quite a bit of knowledge in that area.

This novel has so many twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The conclusion actually surprised me which I was happy about because I can normally predict the ending of this type of book. I was also laughing thoughout the entire book which is rare for a murder/mystery story which made it all the better for me. I found it to be very humorous, especially Buddy and his amnesia! *hehe*

I have not read volumes 1 or 2 so I can't compare this book to them but I really liked this one! I definitely look forward to reading more by this author.

Katie: The Little Girl Who Stuttered and Then Learned to Talk Fluently

Katie: The Little Girl Who Stuttered and Then Learned to Talk Fluently
Katie: The Little Girl Who Stuttered and Then Learned to Talk Fluently
Author: Ronald L. Webster
Publisher: Createspace
Pages: 40

Summary:

This heart-warming story about a smart, vivacious young girl who wants to overcome her stuttering inspires children and parents, alike.

Katie experiences some daily frustrations when her stuttering inhibits her ability to freely share her thoughts and feelings.

Katie's ardent journey to fluency is recounted in this unforgettable, non-fiction book.

My Thoughts:

This story is about a little girl, Katie, who stuttered. You get to go along on her journey to overcome stuttering.

Alright, I am going to first tell you all about the things that I didn't necessarily like about this book. I think the title it too lengthy, it's really a mouthful. I believe that something to the effect of Katie: The Little Girl Who Stuttered or Katie: The Girl Who Overcame Stuttering would have been more catchy. Second, the book was VERY descriptive and goes into detail of every part of her treatment and I found that my children were getting bored while I was reading this to them. For a childrens' book I think they could have changed this to make the book more interesting to kids.

Now for what I did like. I think that this book is great to read to your children if they don't stutter because it teaches them to be more accepting and understanding of people who do. It also shows them that people who stutter are not unintelligent and they should not be made fun of, teased, or bullied because of it. We all know there's a lot of that going around these days! This book would also be great for children who do stutter because it lets them know that they are not alone and there is hope for them to learn to speak without stuttering. So all in all, I liked this book I just think changes could be made to make it more appealing to children.
